Since arriving at Avondale School, Week of Worship (WOW) has always brought with it a unique challenge transforming the MPC into a sacred space for worship. Converting a basketball court into a place of spiritual reflection doesn’t happen by accident. It has required countless hours of after-school setup, weekend preparations, and the dedication of a committed team working diligently behind the scenes.
In March this year, we experienced a significant milestone: our final Week of Worship in the MPC. Why? Because this term, we’ve entered a new season. With the opening of our new Worship Centre and Performing Arts facility, we can now gather for Secondary WOW in a purpose-built space created for worshipping together as a school community.
While the venue may have changed, the effort behind the scenes remains just as strong. A large team continues to support the event through setup, production, and logistics, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing commitment. It has also been inspiring to see our students take the lead - from an all-student worship band to our enthusiastic Year 10 hosts, their dedication has been truly commendable. Many have generously given their time before and after school, during lunch breaks, and outside rehearsal hours to contribute meaningfully to the worship experience.
This term’s WOW theme, IRL - In Real Life, has served as a powerful reminder that Jesus is not simply a historical figure or someone we learn about through others. Pr Adam Schulz has been encouraging us to encounter Jesus personally not through second-hand stories, but through real-life experiences. One compelling example is the story of Jesus calming the storm. The disciples had heard His teachings and witnessed His miracles, but when He commanded the wind and waves to be still, they were left in awe. That moment was their IRL experience a direct, life-changing encounter with Jesus’ power and presence.
That’s the essence of our theme: creating a space for our students to not just learn about Jesus, but to truly meet Him - in real life.
