Kindergarten at Avondale School

Building solid foundations in children enables them to not just survive, but thrive as they begin their educational journey. As a school grounded in Christian values, Kindergarten at Avondale provides students a safe place to develop character and build resilience, preparing them for the obstacles and opportunities they will encounter along the way.

KINDY PRACTICE DAYS

There are two Kindy Practice Days that take place in Term 4. These will help your child ease into the school routine. Further details will be sent out closer to the event.

COMMENCEMENT OF SCHOOL YEAR

The first day of school is generally the last week in January. During that week, there will be a Meet-The-Teacher Day prior to the beginning of actual classes.

View full school calendar.

KINDY REST DAYS

During Term 1 there are three Kindy Rest Days, which help your child get acquainted with the routines of school. These generally take place on a Wednesday in Weeks 2, 3 and 4. Your child is not required to be at school on these days.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

All Kindy students wear the Avondale School sport uniform each day at school. This was driven by the desire for our young students to comfortably engage in flexible, play-based learning. An important aspect of the transition to school is the confidence that students feel in their growing independence. The sport uniform makes it easier for students to dress themselves and manage toileting independently.

Full uniform details here and at the The School Locker Uniform Shop.

LUNCHES

Parents are welcome to pack a lunch for their child, which can be placed in the dedicated student fridge. There is also a canteen (The Munchery) on site, which can provide pre-ordered meals daily, both at lunchtime and recess. Orders are placed online through MunchMonitor. You will be provided instructions to create an account prior to the commencement of your child's enrolment.

CAMPUS MINISTRIES & WELLBEING

Know that we are here to support your students. The Campus Ministries team are committed to the wellbeing of your child. From Kindergarten to Year 12, the team provides mentoring, counselling, discipleship and Spiritual guidance. The team consists of Counsellors, Chaplains, and our Gateway Campus Church Pastors. Students have the opportunity to meet with our Counsellors from Kindergarten, in order to journey with your child and support their mental health and overall wellbeing. In a similar way, our Chaplains and Pastors are also available to provide spiritual guidance through personal interaction and Christ centred programs, which include: Chapels, Week of Worships, Church Services and Bible Studies.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

Students in Kindy participate in 30 minutes of music and dance each week. During this time they will be exposed to a variety of percussion instruments, drums, xylophones and metalophones, along with singing and dancing. As they move through Primary School, they will delve into the violin, keyboard, ukulele, bucket drumming, along with the opportunity to join a primary choir, ukulele club, brass band and string ensemble. Private tuition is also available for students wishing to grow their skills in instruments such as piano, voice, drumming, guitar, brass, wind and string instruments.

SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES

Along with the on campus sport, Avondale School, as a member of the Hunter Region Independent Schools (HRIS), has the opportunity to participate and compete in a large number of sports, ranging from Athletics to Soccer, Swimming to Touch Football. Being a member of the HRIS group allows students a pathway to the Association of Independent Co-Educational Schools (AICES), the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) competition and NSW All-School events. We have had students compete right through to State levels in Hockey, Cross Country and Athletics. This is something to look forward to throughout Primary.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Students are encouraged as early as Kindy in developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is fostered throughout Primary by the use of Bee-Bots, Blue-Bots and Sphero’s in Stage 1, Lego Robotics in Stage 2, and the M-Bots and Micro:bits in Stage 3. Students will create games using Scratch, design a laser-cut car using Adobe Illustrator, and make code to collect data such as an exercise step counter, or the temperature! From Year 3 onwards students also have the privilege of being provided with their own iPad to use in the classroom. This is particularly important as technology is integrated throughout all learning, not just in computer lab classes. The core philosophy is that technology is just one tool we can use to achieve deep learning as we explore the skills we need in the modern world we live in.
