Being An Influencer

The View - Nov 01, 2024

In a world saturated with social media influencers, the concept of 'influence' often conjures images of viral trends and online personas. However, when it comes to nurturing faith and spirituality, there exists a rich legacy of influential figures who have profoundly shaped Christianity. This term for Chapels, we look to these historical influencers who have contributed to the growth and development of the Christian faith.

The term 'influencer' typically implies someone who affects the behaviour or opinions of others, often through charisma, communication, or reach. In the context of Christianity, influencers include theologians, missionaries, reformers, and everyday believers whose lives and actions have left an indelible mark on the faith. These figures embody principles of love, service, and dedication, illustrating that true influence extends beyond mere popularity.

People like Martin Luther, William Tyndale, George Muller and C.S. Lewis come to mind when thinking of early influencers of the church. Mother Teresa was a modern influencer whose life exemplified selfless service and compassion. Like myself many of us have heard and seen stories of Mother Teresa. Her commitment to the poor and the less fortunate inspired countless individuals to act on their faith and live out the Gospel in tangible ways.

The woman at the well (John 4) illustrates 'influencer' best for me. The woman who we don’t even know her name is transformed from her encounter with Jesus. By engaging with Jesus, she overcomes social barriers and personal shame, becoming a beacon of hope for her community. Her journey from isolation to influence demonstrates how authentic dialogue and compassion can inspire change, encouraging others to seek truth and embrace acceptance. Through her testimony, she empowers those around her to explore their faith and find redemption, illustrating the profound impact one individual can have on many.

By emphasising the theme of 'influencers' we aim to guide students to appreciate the rich tapestry of Christian history. These influencers not only spread the message of Christ but also exemplified how to live out that message in practical, impactful ways. In a culture obsessed with fleeting fame, the lives of these influential figures remind us that true impact lies in love, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. By celebrating their legacies, school chapels can cultivate a generation of thoughtful, committed individuals ready to influence the world for good.
