Each year, our Year 6 students are given the special privilege of forming meaningful connections with our Kindergarten students through our Kindy Buddies program. This treasured initiative is far more than just a series of visits—it’s a journey of mentorship, growth, and shared joy.
Throughout the week, our Year 6 students spend two to three sessions with their Kindy buddies. These times are filled with a variety of engaging activities—reading stories together, helping with schoolwork, teaching handball skills, making and flying kites, or even taking a walk to the dam to count ducks. These simple yet powerful moments become building blocks of trust, friendship, and confidence.
For our Kindy students, having an older buddy creates a sense of belonging and security. They look up to their Year 6 partners with admiration, finding encouragement in their support. The older students, in turn, embrace the opportunity to demonstrate responsibility, leadership, and maturity. They take this role very seriously, proudly rising to the occasion. It quickly becomes the highlight of the week, with great anticipation and excitement on both sides. The impact of these interactions extends far beyond the classroom. Watching the gentle way a Year 6 student helps their buddy with schoolwork or cheers them on in a game reminds us of the beauty of serving others. It reflects a Christ-like character that values kindness, humility, and care.
As Jesus said in Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” In spending time with their younger buddies, our senior students are not only mentoring—they are modelling the love and compassion that Jesus showed to the smallest among us.
It is a joy and privilege to witness the growth of both our Kindy and Year 6 students through this program. These moments remind us that leadership starts with service, and that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact.
