Calm in the Chaos

The View - Sept 12, 2025

All I could hear now was silence, so I carefully opened my eyes. The sounds of flying glass, crunching metal and breaking wood stopped as quick as it started. I found myself looking up, I had ducked just in time. A large fencepost entered the windscreen just above the steering wheel and exited through the back window of the ute. Before this, my morning had started off so well but everything can change in a moment. I had slid off the road, down an embankment and through a fence. It was the middle of a North Idaho winter and the road was particularly icy that day. I was returning from feeding the horses that belonged to the place that I worked at. The way in was ok, the way out wasn’t. The difference was I no longer had a ute full of hay adding weight to the vehicle. I had driven on snow and ice covered roads for years. I knew that extra weight meant greater traction and to slow down. But, I was in a hurry, trying to get extra work done before going into town. Thankfully I only suffered a bruised ego and the main damage to the ute was glass.

This week, we are looking at wisdom, or another way to look at it is applied knowledge or common sense. Did you know that as your stress level increases, your functional IQ goes down? Here’s a fun fact, the US Army Special Forces are now training soldiers to engage in breathing exercises to reduce stress in real combat? The purpose is to get soldiers to refocus, calm down and make real life saving decisions.

Stress and hurry often takes up too much of our modern life. As you finish this week, I want to encourage you to pause. Take a breath, say a prayer and reconnect with the God who grants peace when all we see is chaos.
