Aboriginal speaker Eddy Kneebone once shared a powerful insight about traditional life among Aboriginal people living close to the land. He explained that each young person in the tribe was entrusted with a vital piece of knowledge; perhaps the location of a hidden waterhole, the medicinal properties of a certain plant, or where particular food sources could be found. That young person would guard this information carefully until the time came when the tribe needed it.
This simple custom created something extraordinary. It gave every young person a sense of purpose, connection, and importance. They were not merely included. They belonged. Their contribution mattered. In turn, this nurtured self-esteem, personal worth, and a deep understanding that each individual had a role to play in the wellbeing of the whole community.
At Avondale School, we understand the importance of belonging in much the same way. We know that a strong sense of belonging is foundational to learning, growth, and thriving. When students feel safe, valued, and connected, they are far more able to engage confidently in the classroom, build friendships, and take positive steps forward in their learning journey.
During these first weeks of school, our staff will be intentionally focused on creating an environment of safety, connection, and respect. We want every student to feel seen, heard, known, and loved. We celebrate the unique differences that each child brings, while also enjoying the shared experiences that unite us as one school community.
As a Christian school, we believe that belonging is rooted in something even deeper: the truth that every child is created in the image of God and is deeply loved by Him. Scripture reminds us that we are all part of one body, and each person has value and purpose. No one is insignificant, and no one is forgotten.
We also know that each student must discover their God-given gifts, develop their talents, and understand the vital role they play within their class, family, and wider community. Opportunities to lead, to serve, and to contribute, both within the school and beyond, help our young people grow in confidence and character.
Our hope at Avondale School is that every student will know they belong, and that they were created to contribute.
In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. Romans 5 4-6 NLV
