More Than a Picture

The View - May 22, 2026

This week we enjoyed School Photo Day. Across the campus there were nicely pressed uniforms, brushed hair (which must be nice for those that have it!), straightened ties, bright smiles and many reminders from teachers to “stand still just for a moment!” For many families, these photos will become treasured memories, marking another year of growth and change. As I watched students prepare for their class and individual photos, I was reminded of something deeper within the Gospel message.

Photo Day is, in many ways, about presenting our best selves. We naturally want the perfect smile and the tidy appearance because photographs capture a moment that lasts. Yet the beautiful truth of the Gospel is that God sees far beyond the outward image. While people often focus on appearances, God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).

The Gospel reminds us that our worth is not found in how polished, talented or perfect we appear to others. Our value comes from being created in the image of God and deeply loved by Him. Every child in every class photo is someone known personally by Jesus, not because of achievement, appearance or popularity, but simply because they are His precious creation.

School photos also remind us how quickly children grow. One day these images will prompt families to remember friendships, laughter, learning over the school years that seemed ordinary at the time but later became treasured memories. Sometimes, when the photos arrive, they are not quite what we hoped for; perhaps we blinked at the wrong moment or were looking the wrong way while everyone else smiled perfectly. In many ways, the Gospel speaks into this as well. It speaks of how we may not have the perfect moments that are seen by others, but through Jesus, we are given forgiveness again and again. When God looks at those who place their trust in Him, He sees the perfection of His Son in our place and Jesus smiling claiming us as His.

As families receive this year’s photos, my prayer is that they see more than uniforms and smiles. I hope you see a snapshot, a moment to grab and reflect of your children growing not only academically, but also in character, compassion, and faith.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
