Primary Chess Competition

Primary News - June 07, 2024

This week Avondale School hosted the first rounds of the Newcastle Junior Chess Zone (A) Competition. There are 3 divisions in this competition being KINGS (teams playing at a high standard), KNIGHTS (teams playing at an average standard) and ROOKIES (teams that are learning the basics of chess). Avondale School has one KINGS team which will play later in the year. On Monday there were 8 teams in the ROOKIES Division and 6 teams in the KNIGHTS Division. The Avondale ROOKIES (C) team came 1st place scoring 26/28 points. The two Avondale KNIGHTS teams came 1st (13.5 points) and 2nd (13 points) by a very close margin. The second half of the competition will be played in Term 3 against the same 14 teams. The winners of both divisions will then progress to the finals in Newcastle later in the year.
