Science & Engineering Challenge Day

Secondary News - Apr 01, 2022

On Thursday, some 27 Year 9 and 10 students made their way to the Forum at Newcastle University for the 2022 Newcastle round of the Science and Engineering Challenge. Students participated in teams of three or four in challenges such as: Helter Skelter Shelter (building a shelter that can withstand the ground shaking), ElectraCITY (simulation on power distribution), Mission to Mars (design and build a rover to work on the Mars surface), and the penultimate challenge – GOLD FEVER! (build and test a bridge to carry gold across a gorge), along with many other challenges.

Students had a great day of challenge and fun and learnt a lot about technology, problem solving, working in teams and preserving for the best result. Competition on the day was very strong and Avondale finished 2nd out of eight schools in the Challenge. Mr Vogel and Mrs Venegas were proud of all performances by the teams and were impressed with the resiliency and perseverance of our students to produce their best work. A highly commendable performance by our students who enjoyed the day and had fun rising to the challenges.
