STROMLO All School Mountain Biking

Secondary News - Sept 08, 2023

Last Thursday started very early for 26 students and a few teachers as the buses were packed and bikes loaded to head to Canberra for the ACT Schools Mountain Bike Championships. The practice laps that afternoon at Mt Stromlo were completed in beautiful sunshine with only one crash. The carbohydrate loaded dinner and an early night was good preparation for racing the next day.Waking up at 7.00am and still being 0 degrees outside was challenging for some, but by race time at 10.00am it was clear blue skies. 12 laps in 4 hours was Avondale's best result from the Mixed College team, coming in 2nd overall with Amy M, Matthew G, Jai L and Nathan S receiving medals. The Senior Girls team came in 3rd completing 9 laps with Siena C, Charlotte M and Grace E also receiving medals. Our next best result was the College Boys team coming in 5th place. Matthew G ended up with the third fastest lap of the day in 17:51 for 7km, and Amy M was the third fastest in the girls event with a time of 22:08. The other teams were ranked from 6th down to 28th, a commendable effort considering there were close to 600 riders there on the day competing. A big thank you to the parents and staff who came along as support crew and Canberra Christian School who once again allowed us to stay at their school.
