Student Leaders Visit NSW Parliament

Secondary News - June 06, 2025

A group of student leaders from our school recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the NSW Parliament House in Sydney. Representing the school were Primary School Captains, Antigone C and Dalton T, Secondary School Captains, Elina T and Will B, and Secondary Vice Captains, Mahalia P and Ethan C. They were accompanied by Mr Hosken.

After travelling into the city by train, the students arrived at NSW Parliament House for a special behind-the-scenes tour hosted by Mr Greg Piper, the Member for Lake Macquarie and Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly. This VIP experience included access to areas of the building that are not open to the public.

A standout moment of the day was having lunch with Mr Piper, who spoke warmly with the students about his journey from high school student to Speaker of the Parliament. He shared insights about leadership and encouraged the students to consider how they might help shape their communities for the better. Mr Piper and his staff were incredibly welcoming and took time to answer all of the students’ thoughtful questions.

The group also had the chance to observe Question Time in the Legislative Assembly, gaining a first-hand look at how state laws are debated and decisions are made.In addition to the tour, students met the Minister for Emergency Services, Mr Jihad Dib, who was hosting an exhibition with Fire and Rescue NSW. As part of their winter safety campaign, NSW Fire and Rescue Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell shared with our leaders important resources designed to help families prepare their homes for winter and respond safely in emergencies. You can explore these resources as a family by visiting their website.

It was an inspiring and memorable day, offering a unique insight into leadership, democracy, and our collective responsibility to work towards a better Australia.
