What Does Success Look Like?

The View - June 26, 2026

Recently, I came across a story from the FIFA World Cup that made me stop and think about how we define success.

Cape Verde, a small island nation making its World Cup debut, was drawn against Spain, one of the strongest teams in the world. Few gave Cape Verde much chance. Standing in goal was Vozinha, a 40-year-old goalkeeper facing some of the best attacking players on the planet.

For ninety minutes, he stood firm. Save after save, he denied Spain and helped his team secure a remarkable 0–0 draw.Cape Verde did not win. Vozinha did not lift a trophy that day. Yet his performance was celebrated around the world because it was the result of years of faithful preparation, perseverance, and dedication. At 40 years old, playing against one of the world's strongest teams, he showed that success is often about being ready when your moment comes.

It made me wonder how often we define success too narrowly. In schools, success is sometimes measured by grades, awards, sporting results, or performances. While these achievements are worth celebrating, they are only part of the picture. The success we see is often built on countless unseen moments: a student practising their reading each night, persisting through a challenging maths concept, choosing kindness in a difficult friendship, or continuing to try after making a mistake.

The reality is that success rarely begins on the day of the event. It begins much earlier through small, consistent acts of faithfulness.

As parents and educators, we are privileged to witness these moments every day. We see children learning resilience, developing character, and growing in confidence. These may not always attract applause, but they are often the foundations upon which future success is built.

The Bible reminds us in Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." The harvest is not always immediate. Growth often happens quietly, through perseverance and faithfulness over time. Whether in sport, learning, relationships, or faith, success is often less about a single moment and more about the habits and character that are developed long before that moment arrives.

As we approach the final weeks of term, may we continue to encourage our children to value faithfulness as much as achievement, knowing that God often uses the ordinary, everyday moments to prepare us for extraordinary opportunities.
