Last week, our Year 10 students attended the BStreetSmart event at Qudos Bank Arena, an engaging and eye-opening program designed to promote safe driving and decision-making among young people. The event is run by Westmead Hospital’s Trauma Service and aims to reduce road trauma by giving students the knowledge, skills, and awareness they need before they become independent drivers or passengers.
Throughout the day, students heard from emergency service workers, medical professionals, and survivors of road accidents. They witnessed a live crash-rescue demonstration, showing how police, paramedics, and firefighters work together in real emergencies. Presentations highlighted the real-life consequences of risky behaviours such as speeding, drink-driving, mobile phone use, and not wearing seatbelts. Students were particularly moved by the personal stories shared by crash survivors and their families, which offered a raw and powerful reminder of how one decision can change lives forever. The event encouraged them to think critically about their responsibilities on the road and as passengers.
BStreetSmart was a valuable and impactful experience, equipping our Year 10 students with practical knowledge and a greater understanding of how to keep themselves and others safe.
