Year 11 PROPEL: From Garden to Canteen

Secondary News - Oct 30, 2026

Did you know that some of the fresh food in our school canteen comes straight from our own school grounds? Since Ms Page initiated the hydroponics project in 2025, PROPEL students have been working towards a practical goal: growing fresh produce to help supply the canteen with healthy ingredients for our school community. And they’re making it happen! The canteen has received a regular, ongoing supply of fresh lettuce for burgers and salads, along with seasonal cherry tomatoes and other vegetables throughout the year.

This year, the project has expanded to include the school’s traditional vegetable gardens, with PROPEL and Year 9 FUSION students working intensively over recent terms to develop the garden beds and increase opportunities for growing fresh food.

There’s plenty of learning happening alongside the planting, watering and harvesting! Through Work Studies, PROPEL students are developing real-world skills in teamwork, organisation, stock management, supply and demand, and understanding what it takes to grow a product and get it to the customer. They’re seeing firsthand how planning, persistence and collaboration can turn an idea into something that benefits the whole school.

From growing to supplying, students are putting learning into action — and helping our canteen serve up a little more freshness, straight from the school garden!
