The Year 11 PROPEL team are working through their first Year 12 module - Road to Refuge. This integrated unit focuses on the experiences of refugees and the challenges they face in seeking safety, resettlement, and cultural integration. Each student takes on the role of a Refugee Support Liaison Officer (RSLO), learning about the context and needs of refugees arriving in Australia and working to meet the arrival needs of a specific family seeking refuge. As students put themselves into a support role, they must build their capacity for understanding of others situation and circumstance.
A meaningful part of this unit is hearing stories and meeting people who have experienced the need to leave their countries for a variety of reasons. When presented with an opportunity to attend a multicultural event hosted by Mosaic Multicultural Connections, the team were thrilled. Mosaic works in the Hunter and Central Coast regions to support people as they a settle in Australia and assist people from multicultural backgrounds to actively engage with the communities where they live. There were over 60 organisations represented at the event, including health services, education services, legal aid, police services, interpreter services and many more.
The PROPEL students appreciated the opportunity to attend and help out at the event, and were able to make real connections with services and individuals in the community. Each student recieved a certificate of recognition for their contribution, and were inspired by the work that Mosaic does and the way they make a very real impact in the lives of those they serve. More than an engaging event to help students successfully complete an assessment task, this was an encounter that opened eyes, built connections and inspired possibilities of how they can make an impact.
