Last week the Year 11 PROPEL students had the opportunity to visit Rhema FM, the Hunter’s local Christian radio station. The excursion gave insight into how a radio station is run, the history of local Christian radio and future plans to stay relevant in a constantly evolving world. This links closely with the current topic being studied in Year 11 - News and the Media. Students had the privilege of getting some on-air time responding to questions and challenges, and the opportunity to use the recording equipment to report on a simulated news story from several perspectives, highlighting bias in the media and how it can influence others.
Reflection from the students included comments such as:
“What began as a simple school trip turned into a memorable reminder of how media can carry light into the world.”
“Going to Radio Rhema was an exciting and fun day that gave us insight into different types of roles in the media.”
“The Rhema team were incredibly welcoming and made the visit lots of fun.”
“The visit to Rhema FM was both educational and inspiring. It helped us appreciate the power of radio as a tool to share positive messages and connect with the community.”
We are so grateful to the team at Rhema FM for taking time out to share their wisdom and expertise with us; any chance for practical application of our learning is so appreciated.
