Year 11 PROPEL Visit Rhema FM

Secondary News - May 08, 2026

Our Year 11 PROPEL students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting and highly practical excursion as part of their PROPEL NEWS simulation unit.

A main part of the day centred around a visit to Rhema FM Newcastle, where students stepped inside a live radio environment and experienced the fast-paced world of broadcasting. They explored how news is created and delivered, with a particular focus on understanding bias in the media—an essential skill in today’s information-rich world.

Students had the opportunity to build their confidence by speaking and recording 'on air', experimenting with voice, tone, and delivery. They also gained insight into the various roles involved in radio production, including hosts, producers, and reporters, bringing their classroom learning to life in a meaningful and memorable way.

On the journey home, the learning didn’t stop. Students visited a local second-hand car dealership, where they began applying their financial maths skills in a real-world context. Through conversations with industry professionals, they explored the true costs of car ownership, including insurance, registration, and other on-road expenses. They also gained valuable advice on what to look for when purchasing a used car and how to make informed financial decisions.

With many students approaching the milestone of getting their driver’s licences, this experience was both timely and relevant. It highlighted the importance of budgeting, planning, and making wise choices—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
