Ms Page’s Year 11 PROPEL class recently stepped out of the classroom and into the community. They volunteered at the 20th-anniversary Central Coast Multicultural Expo at Niagara Park Stadium, hosted by the Central Coast branch of Mosaic Multicultural Connections. The day was a central part of the class’s unit, Road to Refuge, which explores the experiences of refugees and migrants as they build new lives in Australia.
Learning Through Serving - Our students weren’t there as spectators. Working alongside the Mosaic team, they helped with set-up and pack-up, supported attendees on the day, and gathered feedback from visitors and service providers. More than 60 organisations attended, offering guidance on health, housing, employment, education, legal rights, disability, family support and more. This gave students a first-hand look at the network of services that helps newcomers settle into a community that is now home to more than 50,000 people born overseas.
This is the heart of service learning. Students learned about the challenges refugees and migrants face by serving them, not just by reading about it. They also saw firsthand the value of giving their time, and they will bring these insights back to school as they take on a similar role.
A Celebration of Culture - Between duties, students enjoyed a vibrant program of cultural music and dance from around the world, with the entire class being spotted on the dance floor joining in learning cultural dances.
Thank you to Mosaic Multicultural Connections for welcoming our students, and well done to the PROPEL class for representing Avondale with such generosity and enthusiasm.
