Last week, our Year 11 students embarked on their Urban Challenge in Sydney, a three-day experience designed to build resilience, independence, teamwork, and social awareness. After arriving at the YHA on Wednesday morning, students were placed into groups, encouraging them to connect and work with others across the cohort. A quick visit to the iconic Paddy’s Markets was followed by a memorable afternoon at The Lion King at the Capitol Theatre, the first live musical experience for many students.
Thursday was packed with adventure, beginning at the Museum of Illusions, where balance and perception were certainly tested, followed by lunch and rides at Luna Park, where many students bravely stepped outside their comfort zones. That evening, we caught the ferry to Manly for dinner. While wet weather meant our planned Sydney Harbour Bridge walk could not go ahead, the change of plans was perhaps welcomed by some sore feet, weary legs, and slightly unsettled stomachs!
Friday morning began with a meaningful worship by Mr Kunz before students attended the Big Issue Classroom, where they heard firsthand from individuals who had experienced homelessness. It was a powerful reminder of how quickly circumstances can change and how important compassion and awareness are for those doing it tough in our wider community. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8–9
After exploring the Sydney CBD, we made our way home, grateful for a lovely few days together. Throughout the trip, our students were complimented multiple times on their behaviour, respectfulness, and attitude. They represented the School exceptionally well.
The Urban Challenge is more than just a camp, it is an opportunity for students to experience the pace and complexity of city life, develop independence, and become more aware of both the big issues and the small details happening around them.
