Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful excursion to the Awabakal Education Centre this week, blessed with perfect weather for exploring the outdoors. Students walked along the headland as they learned how Aboriginal people traditionally used native plants and identified places that provided the best natural shelter. They had the opportunity to build their own mini shelters using sticks and bark, craft a paper coolamon, and listen to a story by the billabong. After lunch, the learning continued as students explored the significance of fire in Aboriginal culture and even attempted to create sparks using a traditional fire drill made from timber and bamboo. It was a rich, hands-on learning experience that students thoroughly enjoyed.
