Year 5 had a great time at The Rocks in Sydney last Thursday. The rain cleared at just the right time to let us wander the streets and learn what life was like for those who lived in The Rocks in the 18th and 19th centuries. We got a glimpse of the difficulties experienced by early settlers who made The Rocks their home. We visited the original butcher’s shop, walked down the much cleaner Suez Canal, visited the oldest building in The Rocks—John Cadman’s cottage—walked down the oldest staircase in The Rocks, and saw the remains of one of the poorest houses cut right into the Sydney sandstone. It was very special to be able to walk through Australia’s first-ever settlement and physically be in the space we’ve learned so much about in the classroom.
