Year 7 & 8 Science & Engineering Challenge

Secondary News - May 24, 2024

On Wednesday May 22, some 31 Year 7 and 8 students made their way to the Great Hall at Newcastle University for a round of the 2024 'Build ME a Future' Science and Engineering Challenge. Students participated in teams of four (mostly) in challenges such as: Helter Skelter Shelter, Confounding Communications, Job Juggle, Wind Turbine, Fish Traps, Flight, ELECTRAcity and the penultimate challenge – The Bridge.

Students arrived in good spirits at The Great Hall and were excited for a day of challenge and fun. The learning that took place involved problem solving, teamwork and persevering for the best outcome. There was a lot of planning, designing, testing, refining and testing again, and satisfying progressively difficult scenarios.

Eight schools from the Central Coast, Newcastle and Hunter Region battled it out for best on day. It was a good day out for Avondale students who received the title, Champion School, for highest overall score. Congratulations! Mr Sheedy and Mr Vogel were proud of and impressed with their students' teamwork, tenacity and resilience. Teams that excelled on the day were – Confounding Communications (x2), ELECTRACity and Job Juggle (x2).
