Year 9 & 10 Science and Engineering Challenge

Secondary News - May 03, 2024

Challenges + Problems + Teamwork = Fun + Top Result

On Thursday, April 11, 28 Year 9 and 10 students made their way to the Forum at Newcastle University for the 2024 Newcastle round of the Science and Engineering Challenge. Students participated in teams of three or four in challenges such as: Helter Skelter Shelter, Confounding Communications, Job Jungle, Wind Turbine, Fish Traps, Flight, ELECTRAcity and the penultimate challenge – The Bridge.

Students had a great day of challenge and fun and learnt a lot about technology, problem solving, teamwork and persevering for the best outcome. Competition on the day was very strong and Avondale School finished 2nd out of eight schools in the Challenge. Mr Vogel and Mr Kunz were proud of all performances by the teams and were impressed with the resiliency and tenacity of our students to produce their best work. A highly commendable performance by our students, especially when you consider there was only 3% difference between 1st and 2nd scores for the day.
