Last Thursday, Year 9 Fusion class went to Purple Pear Farm in Maitland. We learned about how they operate, how they give back to the community, and how they grow their farm. The farm uses a CSA, which stands for Community Supported Agriculture. They grow food and crops, and people pay them for the produce. Community members continue to support the farm even if they do not receive food every week, as the amount of produce available can vary. They practise permaculture farming, which is a better way of farming because it works with nature rather than against it. It is a self-sufficient system where plants, animals, soil, and water all support each other. One thing we learned was how they choose to interact with the environment and how they care for their crops. Their farm is really well run and they are able to support up to 50 families with one garden!
