Stage 5 - English

Course Overview

The Stage 5 English course inspires students to learn about the power, value and art of language for communication, knowledge and pleasure. They develop clear and precise skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. In Year 9, students focus on the textual representation of issues that are personally, culturally and globally significant. In Year 10, coursework emboldens students to purposefully experiment with language in their own representation and reflection. Throughout Stage 5 students develop an appreciation of texts from the past and an understanding of how these texts have influenced contemporary ways of thinking. Stage 5 English students further their progress on the high school skill-building continuum, with particular focus on analysing the ways composers use language to shape messages and influence audiences.

Course Content

Students in Stage 5 must read, listen to and view a variety of texts that are appropriate to their needs, interests and abilities.

Students are required to engage meaningfully with:

  • at least 2 works of extended prose (including at least one novel).
  • at least 2 collections of poetry.
  • at least 2 films.
  • at least 2 drama texts.
  • a range of texts including short prose, visual, spoken and multimedia texts.

Across the stage, the selection of texts must give students experiences of:

  • a range of fiction and non-fiction texts that are widely regarded as quality literature.
  • a range of texts by Australian authors.
  • a range of texts by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors.
  • a range of quality texts from around the world, including texts about intercultural and diverse experiences.
  • a range of cultural, social and gender perspectives, including from popular and youth cultures.
Course Assessment

Formal summative assessment tasks allow students to demonstrate their understanding using a range of communication modes throughout Stage 5. These include:

  • Literacy skills tests
  • Visual representation
  • Critical responses, including essay writing
  • Multimodal presentation
  • Imaginative compositions
  • Persuasive compositions
  • Discursive compositions
  • Reflective compositions
Possible Subject Pathways in Stage 6

English is a compulsory subject of study at the HSC level. ALL students must study English Studies* or English (Standard) or English (Advanced). Students in the English (Advanced) course may then elect to study English Extension 1 in Stage 6 and possibly English Extension 2 in Year 12; both of these subjects have entry requirements.

*English Studies is a Category B HSC subject and will only be offered if there is enough interest in the course.
