Stage 5 - Geography


Course Overview

The aim of the Geography course is to stimulate students’ interest in and engagement with the world. Through geographical enquiry students develop an understanding of the interactions between people, places and environments across a range of scales in order to become informed, responsible and active citizens.

Course Content

The Stage 5 course has four focus areas:

  • Sustainable Biomes
  • Changing Places
  • Environmental Change and Management
  • Human Wellbeing

Geography is best taught in the field and the syllabus regards fieldwork as an integral and mandatory part of this course of study.

Course Assessment

Year 9

  • Final Examination
  • Biomes Topic Test
  • Fieldwork (Newcastle)
  • Skills Test

Year 10

  • Research Report and Fieldwork
  • Human Wellbeing Research Task
  • Final Exam
Possible Pathways in Stage 6

Geography is mandatory in Stage 5 and solid achievement in this course will open doors to success in a range of HSIE subjects including Geography, Ancient and Modern History, Business Studies and Legal Studies.
