Stage 6 - Ancient History


Course Overview

The study of history allows students to study and analyse past societies, sites, groups and individuals over the past two millennia. It enables students to acquire knowledge and understanding, historical skills, and values and attitudes essential to an appreciation of the ancient world. It also fosters a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for ancient history, preparing students for informed and active citizenship in the contemporary world.

Course Content

Year 11

  • Tutankhamun’s Tomb, Palmyra and the Silk Road, and the Treatment and Display of Human Remains (Investigating Ancient History)
  • Death and Funerary Customs in Old Kingdom Egypt, and Weapons and Warfare in Assyria (Features of Ancient Societies)
  • An Historical Investigation of the student’s choice

Year 12

  • Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum (Core Study)
  • New Kingdom Egypt society to the death of Amenhotep III (Ancient Societies)
  • Agrippina the Younger (Personalities in their Times)
  • The Julio-Claudians AD 14 - 69 (Historical Periods)

HSC Examination
  • 3 hour examination
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

In order to cope with the demands of this subject, students need skills in organisation. They also need to be prepared to revise regularly through a consistent study program. Strong, written and verbal communication skills are essential.
