Stage 6 - Community and Family Studies (CAFS)


Course Overview

Contemporary Australian society is characterised by rapid social and technological change, cultural diversity, conflicting values and competitive pressures. Developing understanding about society and living in a community requires a comprehensive knowledge of its complex nature. Consequently, Community and Family Studies is an interdisciplinary course drawing upon selected components of family studies, sociology, developmental psychology and students’ general life experiences. This course focuses on skills in resource management that enable people to function effectively in their everyday lives, in families and communities ensuring wellbeing. Community and Family Studies can have a direct and positive influence on the quality of students’ lives both now and in the future, exploring issues that are important to all young people.

Course Content

Year 11

The Year 11 course consists of three mandatory modules:

  • Resource Management (Basic concepts of resource management).
  • Individuals and Groups (The individual’s roles, relationships and tasks within and between groups).
  • Family and Communities (Family structures and functions, and the interaction between family and community).

Year 12

The Year 12 course consists of three core modules:

  • Research Methodology (Research methodology and skills culminating in the production of an Independent Research Project).
  • Groups in Context (The characteristics and needs of specific community groups).
  • Parenting and Caring (Issues facing individuals and groups who adopt roles of parenting and caring in contemporary society).

An Options component is also studies, where one of the following is chosen:

  • Family and Societal Interactions (government and community structures that support and protect families throughout the life span).
  • The Social Impact of Technology (the impact of evolving technologies on individuals and lifestyle).
  • Individuals and Work (contemporary issues confronting individuals as they manage roles within both family and work environments).
Assessments
  • Written tests and examinations, assignments and fieldwork.
  • Practical analysis, small group work, essays, roleplay, verbal and written reports, research projects.
  • Preliminary has three formal assessments. HSC has four formal assessments.
HSC Examination
  • 3 hour paper.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

Apart from the completion of Year 10, there is no prerequisite study necessary.

It is emphasised that this is a theory-based course, and students should have skills in communication, interaction, decision-making, movement, value formation, research and analysis.
