Stage 6 - Design & Technology

Course Overview

Design & Technology develops students’ conceptual understanding and enables them to develop creative problem solving skills within a wide range of technological mediums. The subject is inclusive of a wide range of student needs, interests and aspirations. It provides opportunities for students to develop design projects in areas of individual interest, to discuss equity issues related to design, production and manufacturing in the Australian society, and to consider careers in the fields of design, engineering or architecture.

Course Content

Year 11

  • The study of Designing and Producing.
  • Two design projects. Each project will emphasise the development of different skills in the areas of designing, planning and producing.

Year 12

  • The study of Innovation and Emerging Technologies.
  • Designing, Development, Realisation and Evaluation of a Major Design Project (MDP) and Folio. Graphic communication (drawing) and planning of all aspects of the proposed MDP are significant components of the course, in addition to the actual practical work attempted.
  • The comprehensive study of design and the processes of designing and producing (which were studied in the Year 11 Course) are revised and applied.
Assessment

Year 11

  • Introductory Design Project
  • Mini Design Project
  • Final Examination

Year 12

  • Case Study of an Innovation
  • Oral Presentation on the Design Project
  • Design Project Management Plan
  • Trial Examination
HSC Examination
  • 1.5 hour paper
  • PLUS a Major Design Project marked by NESATES itinerate examiners.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

Apart from the completion of Year 10, there is no prerequisite study for this course. However, students who have taken either Design & Technology or Industrial Technology in Years 9 and 10 would be advantaged.

Project Costs

The cost of introductory design projects and consumables are covered in the subject fees. However, the cost of the Mini Design Project and HSC Major Design Project is the student’s responsibility. Students need to determine the cost of the MDP and have parental support for payment prior to starting work.
