Stage 6 - English Extension 1

Course Overview

English Extension 1 is a one unit course designed for students undertaking English (Advanced) who choose to study at a more intensive level in diverse but specific areas. They enjoy engaging with complex levels of conceptualisation and seek the opportunity to work in increasingly independent ways.

Course Content

Students examine a key text from the past and its manifestations in one or more popular cultures. Through close study they:

  • consider the relationships between the text and its culture;
  • explore the language of the texts and examine the ways in which language shapes and reflects values;
  • consider the effects of different ways of responding to texts; and
  • consider the ways and reasons the original and later manifestations of the text are valued.
Assessment

Tasks include:

  • Multimodal Presentation
  • Writing - Critical and Creative Responses
  • Examinations
  • Independent Related Project (Year 11)
HSC Examination

2 hour paper

  • One question on the Common Module that will require creative and/or critical response.
  • One question that will require a sustained response based on the prescribed and related texts for the studied elective.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills

It is expected that students achieving an A in Year 10 (or equivalent) would be suitable candidates for the Extension 1 course.

Students should possess a keen interest in reading and writing. English Extension 1 requires students to complete substantial independent work. There are high expectations of students to write extended responses and to read and analyse a variety of challenging texts independently.
