Stage 6 - Individual Support - Ageing and Home and Community Specialisation [VET]

Avondale University College is now offering an online VET subject: Certificate III in Individual Support - Ageing and Home and Community Specialization. This will count as 6 HSC credit units over the two years.

Course Overview

If you are compassionate and empathetic and enjoy taking care of others, then a Certificate III in Individual Support is what you need to study. A qualification in Individual Support can help you work as an aged care, personal care, community care worker or as an assistant in nursing.

Once you complete this certificate, you can work at most aged-care and in-home community centres anywhere in Australia.

Course Content

You can study this course during Year 11 and 12. You will do 13 units of study – grouped into six main areas - and 120 hours of work placement. The six main study areas are:

  1. Support Independence and Wellbeing
  2. Compliant Aged Care Practice
  3. Work in Health and Community Services
  4. Support and Empowerment of Older People
  5. Home and Community Support
  6. Infection Prevention
Work Placement

The 120 hours of work placement can be done at one or more facilities. Flexibility is important because work placement can be during morning, afternoon, evening and/or night shifts. You will need your own transport to and from work placements.

Assessment

Assessments include written questions, projects and observations of practical skills in simulated and workplace environments.

HSC Examination

A 2 hour exam focusing on healthy bodies, industry information, safety, work and ageing, and independence and wellbeing may count towards your ATAR.

Course Delivery

The course is available through online classes and through simulations to prepare you for work placements.

Entry Requirements

The completion of Year 10 is the only requirement to start this course. Compassion, empathy and good communication skills are desirable.

Equipment Requirements

You will need uniforms and enclosed shoes for your work placements. Costs for these items vary.
