Stage 6 - Health & Movement Science (HMS)

Course Overview
The Stage 6 Human and Movement Science course engages students in the exploration of the many factors that influence health and movement across the lifespan. Drawing on concepts from health science, physical education, and movement studies, the course empowers students to critically examine the health status of individuals and communities, and to understand the complex and interconnected influences that shape wellbeing. Students investigate a wide range of issues, including lifestyle, access to health services, social justice, and the impact of broader global initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A core focus of the course is the application of scientific principles to human movement. Students study anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, and skill acquisition to enhance both individual and team performance. Movement is explored not just as physical activity, but as a lifelong contributor to health, identity, and social connection. The course also examines how injury prevention, rehabilitation, and inclusive practices can support sustainable engagement in movement across diverse populations.

Health and Movement Science provides students with the opportunity to develop critical thinking, research, communication, and collaboration skills. Students apply their learning to real-world contexts and scenarios, gaining insights into how health and movement concepts can be used to improve quality of life. Building on the PDHPE K–10 syllabus, this Stage 6 course allows for deeper exploration of areas of interest and supports students in developing the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex health and wellbeing landscape.
