Avondale is a member of the Hunter Region Independent Schools competition, where students that qualify in their internal carnivals will be invited to participate at the HRIS level against other schools. In 1991, HRIS sporting competitions commenced with events conducted in Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Netball, Indoor Cricket, Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer and Touch Football. Currently there are 16 member schools stretching from Port Macquarie in the north, Tamworth in the west and Erina in the south. Success at this level then leads to the qualification at the NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) level. Several students over the years have been very successful, making it through to this level in a variety of sports.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, many of these sporting events have been put on hold.

Primary Campus

Avondale Primary Campus has 2 large ovals which are used daily for PE classes, sports, athletics carnivals and break time play. They also have dedicated areas for long jump, discus, cricket, soccer, basketball and netball.

Secondary Campus

Avondale School has a multi-faceted sport program that aims to teach students the value of physical activity as it relates to their health and well being.

  • In Term 1 the focus is on cross country training in preparation for both the school cross country as well as HRIS Carnival at Avondale College.
  • In Term 2 we shift focus to athletic training in preparation for the school carnival and HRIS carnival.
  • In Term 3 team sports start where students have the opportunity to learn a variety of different games including basketball, Oztag, softball, volleyball and soccer.
  • In Term 4 students are able to choose form a wide variety of both Team Sports and off-campus sports, such as surfing, mountain biking and skateboarding.

Our aim at Avondale School is to provide a wide variety of physical activity options to students that will translate into healthy lifestyle choices that will last a lifetime.

The Secondary Campus has one large oval which is used for daily PE classes, sports, Cross Country run, and special events such as Medieval Day and Community Christmas Carols. They also have dedicated areas for basketball, tennis, volleyball and cricket practice nets.
